Hey, sorry for the late replies.

What makes landscapes interesting is just composition and shapes. I don't think you should focus so much on where you need to "begin" especially with the advent of digital. I see so many great artists start their paintings so many different ways but they are all just trying to solve a few basic problems: What is an interesting composition? (The rule of thirds helps and there are many articles on composition but if it looks right - then it looks right so don't let them tie you down) What shapes would make this more interesting and what color palette provides the feel I want?  Just think about how you can make it cool.

It is funny because I actually just graduated from art school and have had tons of classes on different subjects (heaps on figure drawing) but nothing on environments or how to paint them. There is a lot you can get away with in environments as opposed to a persons face or anatomy. Looking at life helps but you should only look at photos when you find yourself stuck. As soon as you get un-stuck hide the photo because if you stick too closely to what you see around you then you become trapped in needing reference and it kills off a lot of interesting ideas before you.

Sorry that was such a long reply I had the same questions when I started and so a lot of that is just the advice that I found helped me the most. People are always welcome to ask for help if they want it from me. (I am not always so long to reply but I was out of town for a month)
